Description
“I knew this beach millennia ago
––came this way in Darwin’s dream
before the swinging pendulum of time
had rocked the crib of history.”
Stanley J. White (from book Ars Poetica and Other Poems, p. 210)
Hurricane Ian made it impossible for me not to be concerned about it because the storm threatened several locations where I have lived, worked, or gone to school for extended periods. As a result, the abstract artworks titled “Then Along Came Hurricane Ian Number 1” and “Then Along Came Hurricane Ian Number 2” began taking form while the extreme weather event unfolded.
Canvas number 1 is a visualization of the double-terror that came from people anticipating the hurricane’s destructive force and then actually experiencing it. The second canvas is an acknowledgement of the devastation combined with a polychromatic celebration of humanity’s ability to set aside divisive grievances during emergencies and exercise unity. Both include juxtaposed sections of swirling lines of color from black, gold, purple, blue, yellow, orange, red, to mixtures of cloud and pink. Both balance dark with light. As mixed media, they combine fine art digital painting with Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle.
People in the southeastern United States (Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia) heard about the possibility of Hurricane Ian striking their region at least a week before it clipped the western edge of Cuba. It got the entire country’s attention as the hurricane hammered its way from the east coast to the west coast of Florida, went out into the Atlantic again and boomeranged for another strike against the southeastern coast before eventually wearing itself out. The entire barrage of direct hits lasted from September 27, 2022 until Sept 30, 2022.
As of this post, more than 1,600 people have been rescued from the hurricane’s devastation. The death toll is more than 100 and expected to climb. The number of houses and other structures which have been destroyed are still being counted.

I appreciate that Laurie. Hurricane Ian scared a lot of us silly, so drawing inspiration from it to create this artwork was one way of calming down.
