Description
Uncaged and Unafraid - Breaking the Gridlock of Hate Number 3 (Silk-Featherbrush Number 14)
“To continue one’s journey in the darkness with one’s footsteps guided by the illumination of remembered radiance is to know courage of a peculiar kind––the courage to demand that light continue to be light even in the surrounding darkness.” --Howard Thurman (as quoted in The River of Winged Dreams by Aberjhani)
This art series began with "Angels and Dangers - Breaking the Gridlock of Hate Number 1," and "The Continuum of Us - Breaking the Gridlock of Hate Number 2." With this third piece, I went against the usual aesthetic grain for the previous works in regard to both the choice of dominant colors and the canvas format. The switch was inspired by the old adage that a beautiful gilded cage is still something which prohibits freedom. Likewise, hatefulness can be justified in many ways but still end up causing at least as much harm to the hater as to a given society. It has been suggested for centuries that we strive to free each other of its toxicity and that kind of reciprocal compassion still seems to be our best option.
STORY BEHIND THE TITLES: The not-so-good news in 2018 that instances of hate crimes in America's 10 largest cities had increased for the fourth consecutive year was not the kind of thing that put smiles on people's faces. Violent attacks for the most part have been driven by various forms of xenophobia prompting fear or hatred of human beings perceived of as different in ways considered threatening. Therefore, Jews, African-Americans, members of the LGBTQ community, Latinos, and many others found themselves victimized in ways ranging from murder and destruction of properties to undisguised social and political discrimination.
The good news is that a lot of good souls across the globe have not given up on humanity's collective ability to overcome its worst tendencies and achieve its greater potentials. They accordingly have continued to reach out to each other under banners of whatever strengthens and unifies the world's communities instead what weakens and divides them.
