Between mass shootings in the United States and Russia’s war in Ukraine, it can hardly be denied that violence and chaos are dominating global headlines in a big way these days. As if the pandemic wasn’t enough by itself. What I find inspiring in the midst of all the carnage is the way so many people respond to it by digging deep within themselves to strengthen their practices of compassion, mindfulness, courage, hope, joy, and Love. Not so easy in days like these.
This artwork titled “A Place Where Love Can Breathe Again” is my attempt to honor the efforts of all who continue to strive for unity and coexistence even in the face of brutal military aggression and cold-hearted gun violence. The work in its entirety may be described as an experimental combination of black and white abstract expressionism, spiritual surrealism, and polychromatic Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle. It is closer to a mixed media fine art painting than a collage. Certain elements acknowledge uncertainty and volatility while other affirm grace and determination.
The planet-shaped ecoscape in this instance is a visualization of my belief that regardless of different forms of destruction taking place in the world, some species of beauty is always hidden away and preparing to emerge in its place. At the top center interior of the globe is what appears to a pink flower with dark ruby leaves but could be something more. It is surrounded by an interior ecological terrain consisting of floating cyan and violet clouds, stretches of blue mountains, and wanderers in the form of yellow, orange, green, and blue featherbots. This puts me one image and step closer towards completion of my current artbook project.

The possibility wildfires would be threatening the giant sequoia trees in the U.S.’s Yosemite Park was not something I considered when working on A PLACE WHERE LOVE CAN BREATHE AGAIN. However, that danger is very real at the moment and it has been brought to my attention how this artwork can be interpreted as reflecting how much humanity stands to lose if more aggressive steps are not taken to reverse extreme climate conditions resulting from human activities. The good news is we know it's possible.
