The Earth supplies us with more than enough oxygen to sustain our individual lives and preserve our human story in many beautiful ways. “Breathing in Light and Breathing out Love” is about not taking that for granted. With its clusters of yellow, blue, orange, green and white blossoms set against a classic black background, it is also about recovery and rebirth. Those two concepts are on a lot of people’s minds as we approach the end of the year 2020 and move closer toward the year 2021.
As for me: I have a very metaphysically-minded friend who used to tell me “Don’t forget to breathe” whenever she thought I was stressing out too much over something. I’ve thought about her words a lot this past summer while reflecting on all the ways people have had to consciously focus on breathing.
The more severe cases of COVID-19 coronavirus placed some on ventilators until, if they survived, their lungs became strong enough to function on their own again. The economic crush resulting from the pandemic have made many feel like they were suffocating under financial pressures and authoritarian restrictions after losing their jobs. People on the U.S. West Coast have been smothered by toxic air resulting from historic wildfires. As my friend did with me, they had to be reminded to make a conscious decision to breathe and not let rage, fear, or physical exhaustion impair their lives. That’s if they could help it at all.
There were also those who found themselves unable to breathe because of knees placed upon their necks or chokeholds clamped around throats. In the latter case, George Floyd has become the most famous example to breathe new life into the old civil and human rights campaigns now revived as Black Lives Matter. Even for those not big on meditation mantras, breathing in love and breathing out light is not a bad idea to carry into the year 2021.
