Description
A few months ago I saw the film EIFFEL starring actor Romain Duris as Gustave Eiffel, the engineering genius behind the construction of the iconic Eiffel Tower from 1887-1889. I liked it a lot because of how it dramatized the different kinds of passion that can motivate expressions of creative genius.
Then a few days after watching the movie, I saw news reports about people in Paris, France, protesting against President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to raise the state pension age from 62 to 64. Despite the conflicts, I thought of how the Eiffel Tower continued to stand as a symbol of democratic hope, individual freedom, and unity. I also thought about how welcoming France was to numerous Americans who during the roaring 1920s used to party with them in clubs and cafes to the sounds of jazz. Blacks and Whites alike enjoyed the fun but African-American jazz musicians were especially celebrated.
With all of the above in mind, I wanted to create a series which both paid tribute to the past and expresses hope for the present. Therefore, I started work on the Eiffel Tower Days and Déjà vu Nights mixed media paintings. Number 1, seen here, contrasts the shining golden days of the past with the intense polychromatic energies shaping the present and future.
It made sense to make the Eiffel Tower Days and Déjà vu Nights prints part of my current Music Heritage Project with radio programmer Theron “Ike” Carter. I’ve done exactly that. In doing so, I thank the people of France for the inspiration and which them peaceful resolutions to the difficult challenges before them.
Accomplishing such resolutions is particularly important in light of the forthcoming 2024 Summer Olympics, a.k.a. Paris 2024.
