Description
This is one of two September 2022 art prints releases from a series of works currently featured in the collectible 2022 FLANNERY O’CONNOR REVIEW published by Georgia College in Milledgeville, Ga. (USA). The publication features an 8-page section of my digital fine art photography, Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle digital paintings, and mixed media art creations. (For more on publication please check out my news page.) The second print from the series posted here on Fine Art America is titled: Sermon in the Valley of Broken Angels.
Seen here is the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Lafayette Square in the downtown Historic District of Savannah. The original full name of the digital photographic painting is: View of the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist from the 15th Floor of DeSoto Hotel in Savannah, GA, June 18, 2021. More about that date in a moment.
The city’s Catholic population increased considerably when immigrants fled revolutions in both Haiti and France during the late 1700s. Many settled in Savannah and established the city’s first parish. They occupied a number of locations before settling at this one 1873-1876. The twin spires, or steeples, for which is famous around the were added in 1896. After surviving catastrophic fires and undergoing numerous repairs, the cathedral was given “Minor Basilica” status in 2020 to denote its historic significance.
FLANNERY O’CONNOR CONNECTION
This is the cathedral which world literary icon Flannery O’Connor attended with her family as a child prior to relocating from Savannah to Milledgeville. The author’s childhood home is just across the street from it. Both sites are favorite tourism destinations during the spring and such festive occasions as Octoberfest. As indicated by the title, the view of the cathedral presented here is from the vantage point of another famous Savannah landmark: The DeSoto Hotel. I was able to create visual notes for the image while attending the FLANNERY O’CONNOR AND FAMILIES SYMPOSIUM on June 18, 2021.
In addition to the cathedral’s elegant façade, the elevated perspective allowed me to capture sections of the city’s landscape, viewed from the west looking east and illustrating features of its classic design patterns. Clusters of trees populate surrounding squares and line the green horizon. I’m thinking this is more of a cityscape than a panorama. Unseen in the distance are the Savannah River and Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks tremendously Angeles. Since the capture was not pre-planned, I often think of how astonished I was to discover the opportunity before me when I looked out and saw the cathedral so clearly ahead. It was a profound moment of creative inspiration and I'm very glad editors at the Flannery O'Connor Review thought enough of the resulting photo-painting to include it in their 20th anniversary edition.
