Description
“I wish you the loving feeling from your own weaving threads today.”
--Dr. Patricia M. Stewart (from foreword to artbook in progress)
The above quote is from the foreword to my current artbook in progress just as the artwork seen here is. Dr. Stewart has long been formally acknowledged as one of the great citizens of the state of Georgia in the U.S.A., so I consider myself quite fortunate to have a foreword by her for the book. The complete image from which the section seen here is taken was created in direct response to her words.
The title of the artwork itself is in reference to 2 things: One is the sale of 436 enslaved Black people which took place March 2 and 3, 1859, at an auction held at a racing track called Ten Broeck Race Course, near the edge of my hometown of Savannah, Georgia. The sale is often cited as one of the largest, if not the very largest, sale of human beings in the history of human trafficking in America. It was reported as tragically heartbreaking by abolitionists who witnessed it.
The second reference is to our current ongoing collective recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. At present, despite advances in the fight against COVID and its variants, the U.S. is moving steadily towards 1 million deaths from plague.
The art print seen here is one section from a larger mixed media piece which blends Original Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle with photography and digital painting. Aesthetically, I view it as abstract expressionism and spiritual surrealism. I wanted to create an image which reflects Dr. Stewart’s “weaving” metaphor because life, as most of us live it, tends to be woven of both joy and pain. Many of us have spent a lot of moments weeping over the past few years but one of our greatest gifts as humans is the ability to weave new stories to make new healing beautiful memories. It’s one way of moving from the weeping time to the weaving time.
