As pointed out in the previous art posts for “Greeting Flannery at the Back Door of My Mind,” the book focuses on 3 different writers. One of them is John Berendt, the author of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” The title of this art piece flips the name of the book to correspond with 2 concepts examined in-depth in the writing of both Berendt and O’Connor: Justice and Mercy. The sculpture near the center of the image is an obvious spiritual reference but also a nod to sculpture as employed in Berendt’s work and in at least one story by O’Connor.

Berendt’s title was in reference to accomplishing certain magical acts in the time just before or just after midnight. The title of this artwork is a salute to the powerful ways people around the world throughout 2020 have been raising their voices in calls to correct social injustices. Watching the different communities around the world come out in support of the families of George Floyd and the #2ManyLivesGone2Soon.

I decided to take a chance and go over-the-top experimental with Glorious Morning in the Garden of Justice and Mercy using layers of Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle, digital photography, and digital painting. The oversized red, sky-blue, green, pink, yellow, dark royal blue, and orange blossoms symbolize human diversity committed to mutually-beneficial goals and purposes. I owe the inspiration for the golden figure to a friend who said she once saw an angel praying in her garden. In truth, I almost named this She Said She Saw an Angel Praying in the Garden.
