In his classic song titled SKYLARK, reportedly written for entertainment legend Judy Garland, composer and native of Savannah, Georgia, Johnny Mercer, asked this musical question: “Is there a meadow in the mist/ Where someone’s waiting to be kissed?” With my “Secrets of the Meadow in the Mist” prints, I would like to propose the answer is yes. Not only is there a meadow in the mist but it is teeming with a lush overgrowth of blossoming plants and varied forms of winged, crawling, and sometimes luminous life.
THIS FIRST EDITION of “Secrets of the Meadow in the Mist” to some might look more like the edge of a meadow leading to the open waters of a marsh at night. That’s an understandable acceptable interpretation since marshes are often the sources of mists low-floating mists. Abundant vegetation, a glowing bird or insect, and still dark water reflect the light of an unseen moon in subdued shades of teal, midnight blue, black, copper, salmon, green, lime-yellow, and orange. The intent is to convey a visual sense of the kind of mystery and romantic longing heard when gifted singers perform the song “Skylark.” Just as many masterful singers have presented their interpretations of the song, I am exploring different visual expressions as well.

Appreciate that Angeles. Took a lot of mixing, cropping and everything else to get this just right. Glad I heeded the advice of one of my mentors & let it slowly develop by adding and taking away over a long period until the painting said stop.

Thank you VIVA. Mercer is a frequent topic of conversation in my hometown & the song SKYLARK is a favorite. After actress Renee Zellweger won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Garland in the movie JUDY I watched the film and was blown away.
