Description

This mixed-media art canvas is composed of black and white photography and digital polychromatic painting to create a visual work of striking contrasts and parallels. The stark black and white background during times of peace would resemble a simple park or playground. Acts of war knock everything off balance, creating a surrealistic viewing and lived experience.

The slightly off-center painting resting diagonally on the bench is my rendering of a member of the Magnolia family of trees known as the Magnolia x soulangeana, or saucer magnolia. Unlike the huge white blossoms many people in the American south are accustomed to seeing on the more common variety, the Saucer Magnolia produces saucer-shaped flowers shaded pink and white with large green oval leaves. Oriental, American, and European varieties are numerous. However, my model for this specific image was found in Savannah, Georgia (USA).

For me, this unusual mixed media painting celebrates the persistence of faith, hope, & beauty in the face of destructive times in world history. War zones come in many forms and by their very nature are surrealistic. Cityscapes turned into battlefields during the conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, or Israel and Hamas/the bombing of Gaza, are apparent enough. Other kinds of wars are less obvious. Like America’s “hate versus love” struggle against mass shootings of the kind that recently ended with 18 people dead in Lewiston, Maine. Something as simple as a flower helps us remember it doesn’t have to be that way.
