Description
The concept of the fallen angel has become a popular one in contemporary films, TV series, and books. In the past they were mostly viewed as villainous betrayers of Heaven. In the present they are often portrayed as heroic victims of epic misunderstandings who symbolize humanity’s worst and best traits.
The fallen angels alluded to in the title of this piece is not so grand as all the above but some have been known as heroes at some point in their lives. Some have been considered otherwise. I am speaking/writing of individuals, or even entire families maybe, forced by circumstances to use seemingly abandoned houses for shelter while bearing the stigma of being declared homeless.
The original model for the chateau pictured here was located not too far from a set of train tracks, surrounded by trees, and obviously needed some serious maintenance attention. At the same time, it was just as obvious that someone down on their luck had been making good use of the space. It prompted thoughts on attempts around the world to re-purpose one segment of society’s overflow for use as another segment’s essential resources.
The style used for this piece is a departure from the Silk-Fatherbrush I have been employing much of this year. I liked the idea of attempting something expressionistic combined with overtones of surrealism and cubism to symbolize beauty in the midst of vulnerability and uncertainty. But mostly I was aiming for a stylistic fusion that would provide a counterpoint to the ideas of banishment or displacement and offer instead a welcoming sense of grace reclaimed and compassion rediscovered.
