Description
Expressing gratitude for the “little things in life” as well as any “big blessings” is something I’ve always done as an adult and something many in the United States remind themselves to do around Thanksgiving time. It is also a practice which has helped a lot of people make it through the COVID-19 pandemic despite painful losses and restrictions. My 3-part “Finding Shelter in the Circle of Gratitude” art series is not a denial of the fact that coronavirus cases and deaths continue to occur in my homeland, with counts going down one week and then up the next. It is more an affirmation that life itself continues, always, to blossom and evolve in different ways.
The individual title for this first Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle canvas in the “Finding Shelter in the Circle of Gratitude” series is “A Bouquet of Humanity.” It comes from attorney Jerry Blackwell’s use of the term during the trial for the murder of George Floyd as he described the diversity of the witnesses who testified. In regard to this artwork, it refers to my interpretation of the relationships and values we sometimes rediscover during catastrophic times. A big lesson reinforced during the pandemic has been the power of unity and cooperation. The Feather-Folks in this artwork indicates the bouquet involves more than just different colored skin tones and reflects such things as culture and heritage.
Those elements are symbolized here by horizonal, vertical, and circular lines of Feather-Figures. The large pink flower blossom in the polychromatic circle, representative of our common humanity, is surrounded by lines of bright blue, dark violet, yellow, gold, blue, purple, green, and brown. Like various members of a community, each of these possess a certain individual beauty by themselves but find it increased when combined with others.
