Henry Street Underpass Art Portal Number 1 (2018-2023)
I first shared the story of my enduring interest in the Henry Street underpass in the historic city of Savannah, Georgia (USA) as part of 2 photographs posted in June 2018. In those images, titled “Henry Street Underpass Numbers 1 and 2,” I described the slanted underpass with railroad tracks above it as one of the most idiosyncratic features of the city.
The images in this new series are mixed media paintings titled "Henry Street Underpass Art Portal Numbers 1 and 2." The insertion of the term "Art Portal" is important because it acknowledges graffiti artists' inability to resist covering the walls on either side of the underpass with their art. It also represents my reimagining of the underpass as a kind of art gallery, or art installation.
To make the concept of an art installation work, I first had to create an image to place alongside illustrations of the underpass itself and styles of graffiti placed on the walls over the years (2018-2023). Hopefully, , in which I have placed images which some might think of more as fine art than graffiti. Because the underpass itself is a curved sloping passage, paintings and photographs of it will generally reflect that aspect. The artwork seen here is best described as a mixed media painting. Hopefully, the artwork created to transform the underpass into an art installation is easy to spot.

As part of this artpiece, I like to think the giant steel X supporting the railroad tracks above the underpass makes a good symbol representing historical or personal crossroads. It’s one of those things that depends on the perspective which the viewer brings to their individual experience of the work.
