Lots of people have experienced what are referred to as lucid dreams. They differ from regular dreams because in them the sleeper knows she or he is sleeping and to some extent may be able to control what happens in the dream. These can be particularly useful for creative folks because memories of lucid dreams are usually pretty clear and they sometimes provide good ideas for things like paintings, songs, or stories.
I’ve had a few lucid dreams and one of the most amazing aspects of them is the sudden realization that I am in fact dreaming. I was already awake when the images for this artwork, “Waking up inside a Dream within a Dream,” came to me. The thing is, I was composing sketches and notes for a vibrantly-colored landscape when the creative process started going in a completely different direction. So maybe I was lucidly day-dreaming.

After being born and raised in the southeastern United States, I spent many years, while pursuing my education and serving in the U.S. Air Force, traveling around America and the world. Much of that story is told in my recent book releases, Greeting Flannery OConnor at the Back Door of My Mind and Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah. Artwork by me is featured on the cover of both books.
My last 3 public exhibits were at the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport Art Gallery in Savannah, Georgia, USA, and during a cultural arts event in the historic Lafayette Square in the same city. I am currently completing an artbook project on the COVID-19 pandemic with text contributions from writers around the world.
