THE ONLY JUSTIFIABLE WAR
Difficult for intelligence,
artificial or DNA-authentic,
to recognize the lovely truth of itself
in a mirror of blood-shattered history
smeared with ghosts and caked with grief.
The holiest most useful of wars
is not waged against infants.
Against flowers struggling to breathe
life into dreams unmindful
of colors of flags. Or skin. Or death.
The only justifiable war is the one to end
whatever ignorance inside you
kidnaps, rapes, tortures, bombs to dust…
the sacred capacity for love or compassion
that makes existence possible at all.

At some point when I was a child, I saw a movie that featured the winged warrior horse Pegasus from Greek mythology carrying the hero Bellerophon into battle. The image stuck in my mind and years later I sometimes associated the figure with any war going on in the world. For me, it doesn’t just represent the clash between world powers. It represents humanity’s ability to one day rise above such things as warfare.
I instinctively responded to news of the Russia-Ukraine conflict when it started more than a year ago by creating images, writing blogs, and composing poetry. I did the same, though trying hard to do something else, when news came about the Israel-Hamas Conflict and the resulting bombing of Gaza. War has been a part of human reality for as long as anyone can remember but I’m convinced it does not have to remain part of our reality. If we can take joy-rides above the Earth in rocket ships and dazzle the world with the wonders of artificial intelligence, we can manage to resolve differences through nonviolent conflict resolution.
Speaking of AI, I should point out that some basic elements of this mixed media painting include AI input. The poem is a completely original composition written by my own human self.

So beautifully done, Aberjhani! Humanity has the ability to rise above warfare, and it will. Humanity is more aware today of what it is up against and humanity will, at some point soon I feel say NO MORE WAR. I pray and hope we see it in our lifetime, Aberjhani. Happy 2024 to you! May we feel peace during the year ahead. May compassion spread rather than things we are constantly made to feel fear of.
