Artist's Description
The story of how I’ve spent more than a year video-recording jazz historian Theron “Ike” Carter for a music heritage book project, is well-known by now. What is less known at this point is how our conversations have inspired corresponding visual art: like the mixed-media collage painting seen here.
The SAVANNAHVERSE JAZZ AND EXISTENTIAL PROCLAMATIONS OF THE BLUES visual art series was not planned. Like many live performances of jazz itself, it was a spontaneous improvisation applied to works in progress since 2018. I coined the term SAVANNAHVERSE (not aware of anyone else who’s ever used it) to express the many paradoxical nuances which make the city of Savannah, Georgia, so captivatingly unique. It is both very old, being one of the United States’ original 13 colonies, and yet very modern with a healthy film industry. It contains a blend of ethnic cultures––African American, Irish, Greek, Latinx, and diverse immigrants–– which all add to its allure.

About Aberjhani
I was born and raised in the southeastern United States, then spent many years, while pursuing my education and serving in the U.S. Air Force, traveling around America and the world. Much of story is told in recent book releases like Greeting Flannery OConnor at the Back Door of My Mind and Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah. Artwork by me is featured on the cover of both books. My last 4 public exhibits were at the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport Art Gallery in Savannah, Georgia, USA, and during a cultural arts event in the historic Lafayette Square in the same city.
