Description
“I definitely want to paint a starry sky now. It often seems to me that the night is even more richly coloured than the day, coloured in the most intense violets, blues and greens. If you look carefully you'll see that some stars are lemony, others have a pink, green, forget-me-not blue glow.” (Letter from Vincent Van Gogh to his sister Willemien Van Gogh)
What is it about Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) that captures the hearts of creative artists all over the world? I think it must have something to do with the depth of his determination to document something definitively transcendent in his art and life. I have found myself reflecting on his story repeatedly over the past 2 years and as a result produced several works inspired by him. “Another Starry Starry Vincent Van Gogh Social Distance Night Number 1” is my humble 2020 homage to his classic paintings: “The Starry Night Over the Rhone” (1888) and “Starry Starry Night” (1889).
The Number 2 edition of this work is essentially an expanded detail focusing on the large gleaming gold and silver-blue stars with additional fiery white stars made more visible. I obviously have not attempted to reproduce the famous swirling stars which Van Gogh introduced in his painting and which many artists have attempted to duplicate.
My goal was to honor the concept by framing it within a visual context of spaces shared and yet separated as dictated by our 2020 coronavirus pandemic times. This is not so disconnected from Van Gogh’s reality as some might think because he painted “Starry Starry Night” while in a sanitarium away from the rest of the world. Aside from that, his unique acutely-sensitive creative genius did not win him much praise while he lived and often caused him to practice social distancing and self-isolate.
