Description
Silk-Featherbrush Number 34
By now it’s probably obvious when the title of one of my art pieces is in reference to John Berendt’s “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” as it is discussed in my own book, “Greeting Flannery O’Connor at the Back Door of My Mind.” This multi-colored rose is a nod to Berendt’s dedication to writing about diverse aspects of Savannah, Georgia (USA), even though doing so made a lot of people uncomfortable. Flannery O’Connor also examined in astonishing ways, and not without controversy, the impact of increasing multiculturalism on the American South.
There is, however, another simpler reason for this artwork’s title. That simpler reason is because after working off-and-on with the basic concept and materials for several years, I finally surprised myself and completed it one summer night just after midnight.
I’ve used the Silk-Featherbrush Artstyle before to create floral or garden-like images but never a single blossom on this scale. The dark background makes each shade of dark and light blue, pale yellow, tangerine, lavender, purple, and green stand out by itself. At the same time it intensifies the rainbow affect created by their combination. The surrounding flares of color enhance the polychromatic rose as well the entire frame.
