One of the words used most frequently during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic is “unprecedented.” As it pertains to the coronavirus, it means something new came along and grabbed everybody’s attention in a way it had never been grabbed before. Among other things it has demonstrated that history/herstory is not just the tale of human beings on earth. It is a narrative of all life, including that which is independent of human influence. “Unprecedented” is also a good description of how we first became aware of the potential magnitude of the threat posed by the new the coronavirus. It happened through what is being called “Outbreak Science,” which identifies and tracks the development of emerging infectious diseases. According to 60 Minutes reporter Bill Whitaker, one of the first computer program algorithms to detect the emerging patterns identified with COVID-19 was that of a Canadian company called BlueDot. After being born and raised in the southeastern United States, I spent many years, while pursuing my education and serving in the U.S. Air Force, traveling around America and the world. Much of that story is told in my recent book releases, Greeting Flannery OConnor at the Back Door of My Mind and Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah.
