Description
One of the words used most frequently during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic is “unprecedented.” As it pertains to the coronavirus, it means something new came along and grabbed everybody’s attention in a way it had never been grabbed before. Among other things it has demonstrated that history/herstory is not just the tale of human beings on earth. It is a narrative of all life, including that which is independent of human influence.
“Unprecedented” is also a good description of how we first became aware of the potential magnitude of the threat posed by the new the coronavirus. It happened through what is being called “Outbreak Science,” which identifies and tracks the development of emerging infectious diseases. According to 60 Minutes reporter Bill Whitaker, one of the first computer program algorithms to detect the emerging patterns identified with COVID-19 was that of a Canadian company called BlueDot. It happened, ironically, on December 31, just as we were saying farewell 2019 and hello roaring 2020s, after reports began surfacing about an unnamed disease in Wuhan, population 11 million, China.
“The Day History Rewrote Itself” is both a celebration of the creative approaches people are using to meet the restrictive challenges imposed by COVID-19 and a visual arts historical marker of these remarkable days. I also like the idea of it as an acknowledgement of organizations like BlueDot which are using artificial intelligence in a way I can understand and appreciate because of how it benefits world populations.
This artwork is the principle image from which 2 others, titled “Detail Perspective 1 from The Day History Rewrote Itself” and “Detail Perspective 2 from The Day History Rewrote Itself.” The color scheme is a mixture of green and brown Earth tones, the dark blue of the cosmos and lighter blue of oceans, floral whites, and smoky orange flames of the sun inside strips of yellow and gold. The sphere-like form filling the center of the canvas recognizes the Earth as home to many different species’ life stories but also as a living space-traveling organism in its own right.

Thank you VIVA. I actually started work on this 2 years ago & had no way of knowing what the final image would be or what it might come to stand for. But I like the way it turned out.
