An English poet once expressed surprise at what she considered qualities of feminine sensitivity in certain poems by me and wanted to know how I managed to accomplish this. Until she asked, I had never thought about it. Then I realized the answer was important and told her I had grown up with 5 older sisters on the maternal side of my family and 4 more on the paternal side ( brothers are in the mix also but outnumbered). After growing up in this heavily gender-inclusive environment, it just so happened that my first supervisor in the publishing industry was a woman. So was my first OIC (Officer in Charge) in the Air Force. What all of this means is that in my personal and professional life I have always experienced women as equals or leaders, so their individual styles and perspectives had natural influences on some of mine.

“The Beauty of a Woman’s Wit and Wisdom” is a visual celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.” Shades of pastel pink, hot pink, lipstick pink, rose pink, and fire pink dominate the center of the print in the form of the petals of a giant blossom of a lotus or a rose. It this art piece, the giant blossom is symbolic of strengths traditionally associated with women: sensitivity, romance, charm, creativity, and compassion expressed through nurturing. It surrounded by the diverse colorful Silk-Featherbrush elements which comprise a community or a life, presented here in tones of light and dark blue, brilliant yellow, bands of black, red, violet, yellow, and dark teal. Directly above the blossom is a cascade of multi-white and light blue which might be interpreted as light pouring through shattered glass ceilings, or glowing on the horizon.
