Description
Silk-Featherbrush Number 3: Symphony of the Wandering Refugees
The quest for a homeland in which an individual or group of people might settle and thrive is one of the great themes of history around the world. It is also one of the most powerful realities of our contemporary times. This artwork, like several others of my visual creations, was inspired by those seeking shelter from storms of unrelenting turmoil, and the compassionate souls attempting to help them reclaim their lives.
Of late I have been inspired by the diverse talented artists of The Hope Project Moria Refugees on Pixels and dedicate this work to them. They are not only heroines and heroes of creative imagination but first-hand witnesses and documentarians to one of the largest shifts of human populations in history.
"Symphony of the Wandering Refugees" started out as an attempt to revise an earlier canvas and ended up becoming one of the first featured in my Silk-Featherbrush Collection. I had been searching for a style that would capture both tension and the promise of relief when my accidental discovery occurred and seemed to do precisely that.
Here, I saw the curving lines of red and magenta with waves of blue and shadow as reminiscent of the of old Berlin Wall and other historic barriers to our shared humanity. Different kinds of walls and rolls of barbed wire exist now along with the horrendous conditions prompting people to leave their native lands. But many on both sides of the barriers, as represented by the single swirls of green, yellow, orange, and blended hues, are reaching out to each other with hopes for better more humane solutions beneficial to all impacted by the crises.
