Number 6 in the Silk-Featherbrush Collection:
"Shining Heart of the Sun" is a visual parable on humanity's capacity for hopefulness versus the inclination of some to drown in the kind of despair that convinces them to harm either themselves or others. We have all lately seen too much of how the latter kind of thinking, or feeling, can end. I attempted to communicate a similar observation some years ago in a poem titled "Time to Be the Sun." This is a condensed version of it:
TIME TO BE THE SUN
Wake up pretty baby.
It’s time to be the sun...
...Open your eyes,
oh precious light.
It’s time to cry
the glorious syllables
of our past,
time to thrash and moan like dragons
breathing hot
the secret songs of our future...
...Wake up pretty baby,
shine bright my summer joy,
Time to be the sun
and send forth flesh
to heal the bones of time.
Time to be the woman
hauling up gold
from a heart you thought destroyed.
Time to be the man
you thought long dead
buried in waters of tortured mind.
Time to be your own faith
and give miracles to heaven.
Time to be your own truth
and pull your ass up out of hell.
Time to be the sun
and watch your soul rise pretty baby shine,
rise pretty baby shine,
rise pretty baby shine.

I remember that poem from your book, I Made My Boy Out of Poetry. (I have that book, you know.) This image reminds me of deep sea life, floating in healing waters... but then there's that beautiful shining heart of the sun pulling my eye to the center. Mysterious, enigmatic. But then, you always have been.
