Nature has always been one of my favorite teachers because of the way it skillfully demonstrates how to flourish in the face of extreme hardships. I especially like the example of the green vines, ferns, and grass in this color photograph. You can see from the small pieces of debris around them that no one (at least not human) intended for these plants to grow and survive here. But they did.
The large gray stones on the lower part of the image are part of a cobblestone lane behind the storefronts and restaurants that line River Street in Savannah, Georgia (USA). The multicolored bricks behind the plants are part of a wall blocking off the street behind it. Many parts of the wall by itself look like an abstract expressionism painting or sculpture. This section stood out for me and I couldn’t help admiring the way the greenery not only sustained itself between these lifeless stones, but transformed them into a natural art collage of textures, earth tones, solid black, thick lin...
I was born and raised in the southeastern United States, then spent many years, while pursuing my education and serving in the U.S. Air Force, traveling around America and the world. Much of story is told in recent book releases like Greeting Flannery OConnor at the Back Door of My Mind and Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah.
