Description
Nature has always been one of my favorite teachers because of the way it skillfully demonstrates how to flourish in the face of extreme hardships. I especially like the example of the green vines, ferns, and grass in this color photograph. You can see from the small pieces of debris around them that no one (at least not human) intended for these plants to grow and survive here. But they did.
The large gray stones on the lower part of the image are part of a cobblestone lane behind the storefronts and restaurants that line River Street in Savannah, Georgia (USA). The multicolored bricks behind the plants are part of a wall blocking off the street behind it. Many parts of the wall by itself look like an abstract expressionism painting or sculpture. This section stood out for me and I couldn’t help admiring the way the greenery not only sustained itself between these lifeless stones, but transformed them into a natural art collage of textures, earth tones, solid black, thick lines of white, and geometrical patterns.
I think of the millions forced to become refugees after Russia invaded Ukraine, and the millions more forced to do the same due to climate change or conflicts in their homeland, and hope they are able to be as resilient as the life thriving, against all odds, in this image.
