Description

The Henry Street underpass in Savannah, Georgia (USA) is one of those idiosyncratic features of the city. The railroad tracks above it have been around for quite some time and still support loads of cargo shipped into Savannah via tankers on the river or by rail from other states.

This shot was taken in color with an applied sepia filter to accent the antique-like design of the historic underpass itself. It is framed by original mixed-media digital abstract art.
The huge steel "X" sits on the walkway and is one of two such structures supporting girders beneath the tracks. This one, with the words "Once upon a time" spray-painted on the wall behind it (the graffiti has changed since taking this photo), is on the north side of the street and the other, shown in Henry Street Underpass Number 2, is on the south side. The different angles of the girders, tracks, walkway rails, and beams of light coming through the brush make the scene natural work of art all by itself.

The actual one-way street slopes downward as you’re driving toward the underpass then up again as you move beyond it. Unfortunately, this design and faulty drainage system turns the street into a small river during heavy rainstorms. Some drivers tend to miscalculate their vehicle's ability to make it through the flood and end up screaming for emergency assistance. That might be the one thing more than any other for which it is most famous.
