As pointed out in the previous art posts for “Greeting Flannery at the Back Door of My Mind,” the book focuses on 3 different writers. One of them is John Berendt, the author of “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” The title of this art piece flips the name of the book to correspond with 2 concepts examined in-depth in the writing of both Berendt and O’Connor: Justice and Mercy. The sculpture near the center of the image is an obvious spiritual reference but also a nod to sculpture as employed in Berendt’s work and in at least one story by O’Connor.
Berendt’s title was in reference to accomplishing certain magical acts in the time just before or just after midnight. The title of this artwork is a salute to the powerful ways people around the world throughout 2020 have been raising their voices in calls to correct social injustices. Much of story is told in recent book releases like Greeting Flannery OConnor at the Back Door of My Mind and Dreams of the Immortal City Savannah.
