Description
"Bridges and Walls" is the fifth canvas in the Renaming the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge Series. This image places the beautiful iconic bridge in the context of current public discourses concerning humanitarian crises caused by people forced to abandon their homes and depend on what the late great American writer Tennessee Williams described as "the kindness of strangers."
Within the current public discourse, many valid concerns are often raised. We find ourselves at a crossroads in history where we are forced to decide on the best courses of actions. Do we build walls in attempts to insulate our individual lives from inescapable changes or do we build bridges in efforts to address humanity's collective needs? At present, people in different communities are responding in different ways according to the conditions confronting them. Thus the layers of walls and the bridge seen here with the ship passing beneath it.
Spanning the Savannah River and leading into South Carolina, this bridge is especially important at the present moment because it is helping many to escape the path of Hurricane Florence. In addition to documenting a particular chapter in its history, I hope my composite art photography of the structure pays some small tribute to its triumphant strength and beauty.
