Description
Bohemianism is a word derived from the name of the Eastern European country of Bohemia. According to Web Art Academy and my own observations, it refers to: “the practice of an unconventional lifestyle, often in the company of like-minded people, involving musical, artistic or literary pursuits, with few permanent ties. Bohemians can be wanderers, adventurers, or vagabonds.”
In this instance, I was out for short adventure during day trip to River Street in historic Savannah, Georgia. It had been years since I visited the western end of the popular tourist destination and I smiled when I saw the sign pictured here next to the American flag. This Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront is part of the Kessler “Autograph Collection” brand. The hotels are famous for their incorporation of full art galleries within a luxury setting. This one opened July 24, 2009, and was actually the second after the Mansion on Forsyth Park. Kessler also operates the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District, which has been described as the largest hospitality project ever undertaken in the city’s famous Historic District.
I was as drawn to the sculpture of the 18th century ship on top of the sign as to the use of the word Bohemian. In the book Greeting Flannery O’Connor at the Back Door of My Mind, I compared my stay at the YMCA Hotel in San Francisco years ago to that of bohemian writers and artists at the famous Beat hotel in Paris. Those accommodations were far being luxurious. I nevertheless was amazed to see a hotel called Bohemian on River Street where just a couple of centuries ago slaves labored loading and unloading cargo shipments from vessels.
