It may have been a long time coming but the declaration of Juneteenth as a Federal Holiday in the United States matters in many different ways. In addition to acknowledging the official end of legalized slavery in the United States just over a century and a half ago, it is also a reminder that, globally, human trafficking still exists and must come to an end. In regard to Juneteenth, this is from a blog on Bright Skylark Literary Productions: "The annual event is celebrated in communities throughout the United States in recognition of both the official end of slavery in America upon the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, and the date of June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas, learned for the first time that they had been freed two and a half years earlier." Meaning the time to celebrate had arrived at last.
